Smarter traffic management with evidence-based decision support system

ITS Lab Site (57)

In the context of persistent, inconvenient, and costly traffic congestion, the challenge lies in finding effective and efficient traffic management solutions. The current approach of trial-and-error implementation by Local Government Units (LGUs) lacks a comprehensive evaluation capability, leaving them unequipped to assess the effectiveness of various traffic schemes.

Therefore, there is a need to address this issue by developing a systematic and reliable method for evaluating traffic management strategies, enabling LGUs to make informed decisions and implement more effective measures to alleviate congestion.

To address this, the introduction of LocalSIM, a microscopic traffic simulation software, empowered road and traffic engineers to make informed decisions and effectively manage traffic, serving as a much-needed decision support system for LGUs.

Without a decision tool, our LGUs would normally adopt a social experiment, a trial-and-error implementation of schemes that normally results in undesirable and costly outcomes in terms of money, time, energy, and public criticism. We should move towards a smarter way of making traffic management decisions that are evidence-based, and less costly. As the project manager of this research, it had been my motivation from the start to provide our local traffic engineers and planners a technological solution to address this challenge.
