Effective port capacity and scheduling system for maritime industry modernization

ITS Lab Site (42)

The ability to easily estimate the capacity of ports to accommodate the number of ships has been raised as a common problem in port management. Measuring the capacity and capacity utilization of a port is essential to ensure the efficient utilization of the infrastructure.

Congestions arise when the demand is greater than the capacity of the ships at the port, which is directly proportional to the number of berths a port has. In order to provide a high level of service, there is a need for a tool to estimate the capacity of ports to accommodate the number of ships and to suggest a definite schedule for the ships that will ply the routes.

PAROLA is a software designed to aid port management offices. It can evaluate the static and dynamic capacity of a port using infrastructure plans and port statistics, and predict when a port most likely will become congested. It can also suggest timetables for vessels in a port system.

Applications

Measuring the port capacity is essential to ensure the efficient use of the available infrastructure. Through port capacity rationalization, we can optimize the utilization of our local ports. We at project PAROLA aim to provide a system for better management of [a network of] ports, which in turn translates to reduced delays and efficient voyage through the Philippine maritime transportation network.
